History of the Wicomico County Bar Association

When was the Association created? We're not sure of that yet, but we do know that the Bar Association was active as early as the 1930's, possibly even the 1920's. Back in the 1940's, the WCBA was an all-male organization, and quite the rowdy bunch. The annual smoker was a popular event, however those stories aren't suitable for this site. Throughout our history, the Association primarily served to host the annual holiday party, and to send flowers and condolences when members or their loved ones passed.

It wasn't until the 1950's or 1960's that May Truitt became the first female attorney in Wicomico County.

For years, the president of the Association was selected by the order in which the attorneys signed the County Test Book. This process continued into the late 1980's, about the same time the Association was finally incorporated.

In the last few decades however, the Association has expanded its role. Now, the Association helps to coordinate and provide pro bono assistance to the community, continuing legal education, and to act as a source of information and news for members. As always, one of our primary purposes is to foster a collegial environment for our members.
